The Homestay Experience

Much of what distinguishes YFU programs from other travel and study abroad programs is the homestay experience. Living with a family in another culture opens up your world and your life. When you first step off the plane, you'll feel like a tourist. But with the support and encouragement of YFU staff and the hospitality and warmth of your host family, you'll soon find yourself living within the culture of your chosen country, not merely skimming its surface.

The exchange experience may be one of the biggest challenges you take on in your life. It's important to go with an open mind and not have too many expectations of what your host family should be like. Students who are flexible and understand that no family is "perfect" usually have a much smoother adjustment than those that go with more rigid expectations.

Through every step of the process, and throughout your stay with your host family, you and your parents can rest assured knowing that YFU staff and volunteers are available and in regular contact with you. Whatever obstacles present themselves, you'll have YFU representatives ready to help you resolve them and get on with the experience of living in a new country.

YFU host families will do their best to make you feel that their home is your home. Each family is carefully screened and chosen so that they can support and enhance your experience of fitting into and becoming a part of their family, as well as supporting you while you discover and grow accustomed to your new country's culture. Many families have sent their own children on YFU exchange and many have also hosted exchange students before.

Your host family will let you know the social customs, their family rules, and whatever else you need to adapt to your new environment. Your host family will provide you with a safe environment from which you can explore your new country and get to know its people. They will look after you as a member of the family and give you all the special help you need as you begin your YFU experience.

YFU host families welcome students into their homes because they wish to participate in the experience. Except where the local culture requires reimbursing the expense of adding a family member, YFU families are unpaid. Your host family is looking forward to having you in their home as much as you are looking forward to your exchange experience!

All YFU Programs are subject to change or cancellation without prior notice.
